Pakistan’s Mobile Industry Surges: 31.4 Million Phones Assembled Locally in 2024
Pakistan’s local mobile phone production reached a record 31.4 million units in 2024, reflecting a significant 47% year-on-year (YoY) growth, according to the latest data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). This surge was primarily driven by import restrictions and higher taxes on imported phones, which encouraged local assembly.
In December 2024 alone, local mobile companies assembled 2.95 million units, marking a 28% increase compared to November. The fourth quarter of 2024 (4Q2024) saw remarkable growth, with 8.79 million units assembled—67% higher than the 5.25 million units produced in the third quarter (3Q2024).
For the full year, smartphones dominated the local production figures, accounting for 59% (18.64 million units), while the remaining 41% (12.74 million units) were 2G feature phones. This trend highlights the growing demand for affordable smartphones in Pakistan’s expanding population.
Local assembly has been crucial in reducing Pakistan’s dependence on imported mobile phones. In 2024, locally manufactured phones fulfilled 95% of the country’s mobile phone demand, compared to a five-year average (2019–2023) of 67% and an eight-year average (2016–2023) of 47%.
The remarkable growth in mobile phone assembly can be attributed to economic recovery, a growing preference for locally assembled devices due to competitive pricing, and increasing smartphone penetration. As the market continues to evolve, local manufacturers are expected to play a critical role in meeting the nation’s rising demand for mobile devices.
